چکیده

In the light of new information it is sometimes necessary to change existing beliefs regarding the state of the world. During such a belief revision reasoners have to decide which beliefs to retain and which ones to retract in order to regain consistency within their belief states. Drawn from the conception that spatial belief revision is based on the alteration of mental models, we discuss the influence of cognitive effort and minimal change when constructing and revising mental models. We offer several possibilities how minimal change can be defined in this context and provide a computational model along with a cost function to describe the revision processes. Furthermore, we present empirical evidence for the suitability of the model. Results indicate that there is a significant influence of cognitive efficiency principles on spatial belief revision.

Minimal belief change, Pareto-optimality and logical consequence

A rational agent changes her beliefs in response to new information; a widely held idea is that such belief changes should be minimal. This paper is an overview of the theory of minimal belief revision. I employ a decisiontheoretic framework to compare various principles for minimal belief revision. The main topics covered include the AGM postulates for belief revision, belief contraction, Grov...

Minimal Belief Change and the Pareto Principle

This paper analyzes the notion of a minimal belief change that incorporates new information. I apply the fundamental decision-theoretic principle of Pareto-optimality to derive a notion of minimal belief change, for two different representations of belief: First, for beliefs represented by a theory–a deductively closed set of sentences or propositions–and second for beliefs represented by an ax...

A Logic-based Model for uncertainty reduction: parallel processing

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) often use incomplete and uncertain information leading to inconsistency. Thus, a clear definition of information revision is required. In logic, most of the usual belief revision operations are characterized by a high computational complexity, which implies actual intractability even for rather small data sets. On the other hand, GIS deal with large amounts ...

Measuring minimal change in argument premise revision

The field of belief revision studies how information can be given up in the face of new, conflicting information, while argumentation provides methods through which conflict can be modelled and the resultant acceptability of arguments evaluated. Prominent theories of belief revision depend on the notion of minimal change, measured in terms of epistemic entrenchment, to determine what beliefs to...
